Keeping Ponds and Water Features Debris Free J&S Landscape BoulderAt J&S Landscape in Longmont, we know it can be difficult keeping ponds and water features debris free. We also know that issues can arise when leaves, dirt, and muck get caught up in pumps or filters and turn your water features into swampy messes. Keeping them clean and maintained will help preserve their appearance and ensure all mechanical elements function properly for longer.

Keep Tree Branches Trimmed

If you have deciduous trees, leaves can become a problem for any nearby ponds or water features, particularly in fall. Regular landscape maintenance will help keep branches trimmed back and the leaves out of your water. Leaves can clog water features and encourage bacteria growth in ponds, so keeping the leaves out will help. You may be tempted to cut down the tree entirely. We generally, don’t recommend this though, because the benefits of having trees usually outweigh such issues.

Install Netting

Since fall leaves can cause trouble for your pond or water feature, you could install removable netting over your water area. Be sure that the net is wider and longer so that it covers the entire area. Some netting comes in shapes, such as domes or pyramids, which allow leaves and other debris to fall to the sides.

Use Grass as a Dirt Trap

Grass can help keep dirt and dust from blowing into your pond or water feature. If you have unplanted areas around your water, putting grass in will help keep your water feature or pond from accumulating a lot of dirt.

Install Edges

Creating a taller edge around your pond can also help keep dust and dirt away from your water feature. Such edges can be constructed with rocks and stones, concrete, or some other material. If you are interested in pursuing edging options, contact us here at J&S Landscape. We can help you choose and install the best edging for your water feature or pond that will work well with your existing landscaping.

Install Filters

There are a number of different types of filters, both mechanical and natural, that will help you with debris and dirt in your water feature. You may need to clean the filters out regularly but filters can help immensely in keeping your water sparkling.

Use a Skimmer

Sometimes simple solutions best. Using a skimmer regularly is an inexpensive method of keeping ponds and water features debris free. If you are going to use a skimmer, it is best to invest in a nice sturdy one that will last a while.

Sterilize to Kill Algae

Algae will turn stagnate water green fast. If you are experiencing an algae problem, you can use a sterilizer to kill the algae. There are also algaecides available. If you have any fish, choose a sterilizer that is safe for your aquatic life. Some algaecides are toxic to fish and other animals.
